The Indore Metro is presently in the process of constructing a mass rapid transit system (MRTS) aimed at serving Indore, the most populous city in Madhya Pradesh. This project is undertaken by the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Co Limited (MPMRCL).
The master plan for the Indore Metro, spanning approximately 94 kilometers in total, was developed by Rohit Associates Cities & Rails Pvt. Ltd. This comprehensive plan envisions the creation of four metro lines and two additional spurs that will criss-cross the city. The initial phase of this project will focus on implementing the Yellow Line (Line-3), which forms a circular route.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Phase 1 of the Indore Metro, covering a distance of 33.53 kilometers, gained approval from the state government in December 2016 and later received the green light from the Central Government's cabinet in October 2018.
The Priority Corridor of the Indore Metro is anticipated to be completed and operational by August 2024, slightly surpassing its original deadline of August 2023. The entirety of Phase 1 is expected to be finalized by 2027.
Initially, the project was planned to be partly financed through an official development assistance (ODA) loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). However, the funding sources have now shifted to include the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for an undisclosed amount and the New Development Bank (NDB), which will contribute $225 million.
In September 2019, the foundation stone for Phase 1 of the project was laid by the state's Chief Minister. Construction commenced in February 2019 and is set to continue until 2027.
